Believe

I was not going to do my regular 25 days of Christmas fun this year. We are/have been in the middle of moving twice, and I just wasn't up to planning all of the craziness. It worked out, because it has definitely been crazy around here, as well as full of sickness. All 5 kids have had what I think to be the flu. I googled the symptoms the other day and was laughing out loud at the exact accuracy. "Comes on suddenly, fever, aches, runny nose, watery eyes." Yep, yep, yep! They forgot to add, "whining, crying, incessant coughing like nails on a chalkboard!!!!!" 

Anyway, the other day, I got into the Christmas spirit and really wanted to make sure we pull our focus in on why we celebrate this time of year. I made a 12 Days of Christmas box and planned some of our usual Christmas fun ideas…some days are more involved and exciting than others :) 

We are looking at different sayings/words/phrases we see and hear around Christmas time and discussing what those things mean (to the world and then also to us as we look through a gospel-lens.)

Today's word was "Believe." We talked about the "belief" in Santa and the beliefs around how he came to be all he is today. We went to the mall and took a pic with Santa, but when we found out it was $25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, we opted to just move on :) The kids were content with having had their picture with him. They got to see him, stand with him, talk to him, and were happy. (They also actually realize nowadays how much $25 is, so they appreciated my decision to eat lunch at the mall instead of paying that much for a little picture that we really couldn't do anything with. There are always lessons in life, aren't there?!) We took this picture to prove we went to the mall:

Josiah's the one with the flu currently. I wasn't sure if I was going to make him take a pic today, but he insisted…with his blanket and no shirt…but whatever!



(I wonder at what point these boys will refuse to participate in these yearly pictures?!)

Soooooo cute!! I think you do such a great job!!! You have such great kids (even if they do whine, argue, etc. as all kids do ;). I love you all a lot and would join you every day if I could! Merry Christmas!!!

Anna I think you are doing an amazing job. Your Naomi reminds me of our Hannah at that age. She is a red head and even at one she had a mind of her own. She was very stubborn, of course she got Jack's genes for stubborness. Ok she got a little from me. She would clear coffee tables with her temper and then love on you. Fun days. Sometimes I miss that time.
I love that you are teaching them what is important as young as they are because it will continue to grow in them as they get older. Blessings to you guys.

Raising Real Men, part 6

Moving into Part Two of the book, "Civilization for the Tough," the Young's begin with "First Things" first! What do you think is the first thing involved in raising REAL men to be civilized? Deuteronomy 6:4-7 The Young's have dubbed this passage of Scripture "the basic commandment for homeschoolers." I think many homeschoolers use this passage, as well as Deut. 11:18-20 , which I even have had on my homeschool blog for awhile :) To summarize the verses: Teach (these words) diligently to your children, talk of them while you sit, when you walk, when you lie down, when you rise... The foundation of the raising of our children (boys or girls) must begin here. Raising Real Men

I just started reading Raising Real Men by Hal and Melanie Young , and I am already blown away. I read so many rave reviews about the book, and (seeing as I have four boys) I figured it would be a good one for my library. I will posting a "quote of the week" from the book here on the blog, as well as various convictions, thoughts, and things I am learning. I would love to have something to look back at once I'm finished reading the book, and I hope it will benefit those of you with boys out there as well. So often, I feel like I need to re-read books once I finish them simply because it takes me so long to get through them. This is also one of those books that I feel like has so much to chew on in one chapter, I need to let it sit for a few days.
